After school today I had a barefoot wander in the garden to see what insects I could find on the roses. Sometimes I find spiders, wasps, ants and the odd butterfly, but today it was only flies.
(Excuse the pyjamas! The first things I do when I get home from work are take of my socks (if I was wearing any) then swap work trousers for comfy old PJs!)
I found a few greenfly hiding in this rose
On another rose I spotted these two...
Sawfly larvae, presumably the same type as this adult version...
The Rose Sawfly, or Arge ochropus.
I had a good look and counted 9 little sawfly caterpillars altogether, plus the adult pictured above and one I saw on another rose bush.
I was surprised to only count 9 as I've seen many more than that in the past...
but then these were photographed one August and are much bigger so I expect today's small group are just the beginning!

Nice photos Louise, keeping it wild, good one.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos, Louise - its good to feel the grass between your toes. I must go and read your link and find out more about the sawfly:)
